Our Osprey Have Returned!

Monday, March 18, 2013
One osprey was observed flying over Smithtown High School West campus at 7am. This afternoon the pair was observed rebuilding their nest. Most of the nest was blown away by our crazy storms this fall and winter starting with Super Storm Sandy and ending the the blizzard of 2013. If you zoom in on the picture below, you can see one of the pair bringing in a branch for the nest.

We had hoped to have a nesting platform installed before the Osprey returned, but were unable to make all the connections in time. Hopefully, we can make arrangements for next fall.  With enough interest and some money, maybe we could even try to get a camera installed!

Please share your observations in comments section below so that we can all keep track of our Osprey.

Our Osprey have returned!

Our Osprey pair returned to Smithtown High School West on March 20, 2012. They immediately began rebuilding their nest on top of the 80 foot light pole in the parking lot. Here are some shots taken on Saturday, March 24th. It is amazing to see how much work they have accomplished in such a short period of time!
This blog is a forum for you to share any observations, questions or comments about our osprey. I welcome the participation of faculty and students! Contact me by email if you need help with blogging. The more eyes on our birds, the more information we can gather.
